The jewel of Bilbao, the Guggenheim
It's impossible to talk about Bilbao without mentioning the wonderful Guggenheim Museum . Designed by American architect Frank Gerhy, the museum is located 16 meters below the city level, as it sits in the Nervión River basin. Its impressive structure is composed of a series of interconnected volumes, some orthogonal and others curved and more or less twisted, giving it its unique shape. All of them are covered in half-millimeter-thick titanium plates, resembling an unmistakable metallic skin that protects it from the elements. Its design was carried out by computer, due to the mathematical complexity involved. It certainly doesn't go unnoticed... Artistic styles include minimalism, pop art, conceptual art, abstract expressionism, and more. Among the countless artists whose work is on display are Kandinsky, Cézanne, Picasso, Miró, Warthol, and more. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and regular admission is €8, with children under 12 free. A must-visit, rounded off with a break at our Casual Bilbao Gurea, located very close to the museum. Afterwards, we recommend one of our tapas tours of the city's gastronomy.
