Casual Hoteles presents its first Sustainability Report

Prensa . Press31/01/2025
Sustainability Report 2024 Casual: Corporate, unique hotel.

January 31, 2025. Since Casual Hoteles created its Sustainability department at the end of 2023, the Valencian company has focused its efforts on monitoring its actions to have a clear image of the impact its business has on an economic, social, and environmental level.

As a result of this exhaustive analysis, the hotel chain has produced its I Sustainability Report, while establishing what its priorities will be in order to comply with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Global Compact's 2030 agenda.

Casual Hoteles: a committed family business

In 2013, Juan Carlos Sanjuán created Casual Hoteles with the goal of building urban hotels that offered accommodation in themed rooms, with a high standard of quality and service, in city centers, and at a fair price. Under the motto "we make things happen," he wanted his business to grow while maintaining a balance between generating profitability and contributing to social development.

11 years later, the chain has 25 hotels and 854 rooms in 13 destinations in Spain and Portugal, and is preparing to incorporate 3 more establishments this year in Milan, where the Casual Eclettico Milano hotel will open its doors in a few days; Ibiza and Naples.

The average occupancy rate for the hotels in 2024 was 91%, and the level of customer satisfaction reached an average score of 8.4 out of 10, according to the review website Trustpilot.

In relation to its commitment to society, its I Sustainability Report reflects how this involvement in environmental preservation, helping the most vulnerable, and generating sustainable employment is bearing fruit.

Goal 2030: to be neutral in terms of CO2 emissions from energy supply

At an environmental level, and with the horizon of delving into the evolution of its carbon footprint, in 2024 Casual Hoteles carried out its first energy audits, and water consumption began to be monitored in several of the group's hotels.

From these analyses, it was established that the group's energy consumption at the close of 2024 was 278,275 kw, and water consumption per hotel reached 181 m3 per month.

In addition, two important environmental projects were carried out, which in just 1 year have already managed to improve the chain's sustainable management. On one hand, an agreement was signed with the retailer Conecta2 Energía, which since 2025 has provided all its hotels with 100% green, non-polluting, clean, and sustainable electricity, produced exclusively from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal, marine, biomass, and biogas. Thanks to this, the group has avoided the emission of 1,134,000 kilos of CO2 per year into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to planting 24,450 trees, or stopping the use of 280 equivalent tons of oil (toe).

The other most notable initiative has been the construction of its own forest, in collaboration with the company Retree, in which it has already planted 673 trees, regenerating an area of 7,403 m2, equivalent to 37 padel courts. The new trees have absorbed 2.28 tons of CO2, an amount similar to that generated by 5 airplane flights from Madrid to London. The Casual Forest, in whose reforestation hotel guests can collaborate by choosing to allocate the cost corresponding to their room cleaning service to planting a tree, is located in Perales de la Alfama, an area of the Teruel steppe, where more than 500 years ago there was a lush juniper forest.

Looking ahead to the coming years, Casual Hoteles plans to continue reducing and offsetting its emissions, until they are neutral by 2030. In this regard, it wants to promote decarbonization by eliminating the use of gas and diesel in its hotels; as well as executing other actions such as modernizing the hotels' air conditioning and DHW systems; implementing home automation equipment equipped with motion and window-opening sensors in its rooms; and generalizing consumption monitoring and conducting energy audits to specify the real measurement of its carbon footprint, among others.

Donation of products worth 194,492 euros to more than 500 families affected by the DANA:

At a social level, Casual Hoteles has several corporate programs that seek to raise money to help NGOs such as Save the Children, the Red Cross, and UNICEF, among others. With the latter, in 2024 it managed to raise 20,208.15 euros, which were allocated to initiatives related to childhood.

But apart from these projects, and others executed to contribute to community proposals related to the respective communities where the different hotels are located, in 2024 the aid provided to those affected by the DANA stood out.

As a chain of Valencian origin, where its president Juan Carlos Sanjuán himself originates from, the reaction of Casual Hoteles to the drama caused by the DANA was immediate.

The group allocated 179,492 euros to the acquisition of home appliances and mattresses for a total of 469 families, who received this aid a few weeks after the catastrophe occurred. In addition, coinciding with the Christmas holidays, the chain delivered baskets with Christmas products worth 10,000 euros to 300 families, and piggy banks valued at 5,000 euros. All of this meant an investment of 194,492 euros in products destined directly to those affected by the DANA.

A gender-equal company, with more than 80% permanent contracts:

On the other hand, at an economic level, Casual Hoteles has contributed to the economic development of the destinations in which it is present. Not only due to the wealth generated directly or indirectly for suppliers in the areas involved, but also with regard to job creation.

In this sense, in 2024 it employed 278 employees, of whom 71% were women. A parity that also occurred at the executive level, since 48% of these positions were occupied by women.

Furthermore, it is worth highlighting the company's commitment to quality employment, since 80% of the contracts were permanent; and to education, since throughout 2024 it invested 12,475.50 euros in carrying out 555 hours of training for its workers.

According to the climate survey carried out by Casual Hoteles, in which half of its staff participated, the vast majority were very satisfied working there, and showed a great attachment to the company and their respective teams, ruling out the possibility of changing companies in the short and medium term.

The reasons given to justify this loyalty were mainly the benefits that Casual Hoteles offers its employees, among which are flexible hours, private health insurance, 100% of training paid for by the company, and the implementation of the PAY FLOW tool, which allows for salary advances at no cost to the employee, among others.

About Casual Hoteles:

Casual Hoteles is a Valencian hotel company, which was founded in 2013 by Juan Carlos Sanjuán, with the goal of becoming the benchmark for themed urban accommodation in Spain. All its hotels have personalized decor, inspired by the destinations in which they are located, and offer quality standards and central locations at fair prices.

They are fun, surprising, and provocative, making Casual Hoteles a disruptive chain that, in 2018, was recognized with the Hostelco Award for "Best Hotel Concept"; in 2023 it obtained the First Tourism Sustainability Award from HOSBEC, in the category of "Best Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy"; and in 2024 it was chosen as the "Chain with the best Corporate Social Responsibility" in the XIV Edition of the Roca Awards for Hotel Initiative.
